John 4:43-54 "How Do You Acquire Trust"

John 4:43-54

43But after the two days He went out from there and went away into Galilee. 44For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet does not have honor in his hometown. 45So when He came into Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all which He did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast.

46So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee, where He made the water wine. And was a certain royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum. 47This one, having heard that Jesus is coming out of Judea to Galilee, went away to Him and kept asking Him that He come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. 48So Jesus said to him, “Unless see signs and wonders shall by no means believe.” 49The royal official says to Him, “Lord, come down before my young child dies!” 50Jesus says to him, “Be going; your son lives!” And the man believed (trusted) the word which Jesus said to him and was going.

51But already as he was going down, his slaves met him and reported, saying, “Your child lives!” 52So he inquired of them the hour in which he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour (1:00 p.m. Jewish time or 7: 00 p.m. Roman time) the fever left him.” 53Then the father knew that in that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives!” And he himself Believed (Trusted), and his whole house. 54This again second sign Jesus did, having come out of Judea to Galilee.

Good Day Child of God! "Father? Your Will Be Done!''  Most Christians know of these verses, or have heard about them in a sermon having to do with either the lack of Faith people have, or the Power Jesus has when He wants things done. Both are good observations, but there is more to it than that.

What if the message had little to do with either of the subjects, lack of Faith or the Power of Healing from Jesus? Let's see what the Spirit has to say.

Today's easy lesson: Two things are probable in our verses above. One is that Jesus had to prove Himself to the hometown crowd because they thought they new Him pretty well. Jesus was the head of the family, Joseph Jesus' earthly father was most likely dead by now, putting Jesus in charge because He was the oldest. Now think of this: Most likely He was not taking on the responsibility of all that the position would entail. Things like teaching the boys, like James, the family business, and keeping the carpentry business going. Dealing with those things that every male family leader must do to feed, cloth, and keep a roof over everyone's head. Why? He is the Son of God. His Mission was not to raise the family, it was to learn as much as He could about His Heavenly Father, and how to deal with the people. He also had to learn the timing and teaching that was to come and when it was to be taught. There had to be some doubt in every neighbors mind as to how credible Jesus was as the Messiah when there was a place they thought He needed to be, and likely He was not dedicated to it. It had to play similarly with the family. As you will recall at one point, a good portion of them, if not all, went to a meeting place where Jesus was healing and tried to retrieve Him as they thought He had lost His mind. All of this goes into the reasoning that it took lots of time to get people from around His earthly home to take Him seriously.

What is the message then? The statement Jesus made saying “Unless see signs and wonders shall by no means believe,” was not a put down as most teach. It was a challenge, and the official picked up on it. He started running back home showing his belief. When his servants found him and told him his son was well, consider this; most likely, when he heard of the timing, that is where his belief turned into solid Trust. That Trust was so strong, his whole household was also convinced. Experiencing what your Father teaches you through the time you spend in the Bible, reading Studies such as these and other activities are all wonderful. However, your Belief will only grow to Trust if you build a relationship by talking to your Father about everything, giving Him a chance to prove how much better your Life is with Him than on your own. Don't trust me, don't trust your pastor, or anyone else that is trying to guide you along the way. Trust the only One who can actually do something to bring peace, love, and joy into your Life, at all times and in all places. Your Abba, Daddy, Father. He can do that, and He will. People like me can point you in the right direction, but your Father? He can get you there. It's that simple. Have a Grace Day!
